Passed peacefully away in the presence of her loving family at Pte. Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, Bertha L. Sparkes of Lower Island Cove, age 85 years.
Predeceased by husband: John L.; parents: Philip B. and Sarah Sparkes; parents-in-law: Louis and Amy Sparkes; brothers; Melvin and John (Shirley) Sparkes.
Left with loving memories, daughter: Pauline (Tony) Doyle; son: Bruce (Wendy); five grandchildren: Melinda (Gary), Miranda (Steve), Crystal (Billy), Tracey, and Adam (Nancy); three great-grandchildren: Bailey, Jenna, and Lily; sister-in-law: Gladys Sparkes; special lifelong friend: Eliza Knapman; also a large number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mom was a faithful servant of her Lord, and devoted many years of service to her church, The Salvation Army, Lower Island Cove. This was evident in her time spent as Corps Treasurer, Corps Sergeant Major, Sunday School Teacher, and Junior Soldiers Leader. Beyond this, she served her community well. She visited others regularly, whether delivering a War Cry, homemade cookies or other treats, or simply spending time with someone who needed a friend.
We would like to thank the staff of Pte. Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion, 1 North, for their excellent care of Mom over the past year.
