I met Bertha in the 1990s when our family visited and stayed with Uncle Phil and Aunt Sarah, along with my mother, Una; and grandmother Eliza. Bertha was very sweet, kind and playful, always fun to be around. We had so many great memories as a result of that visit. My mother Una Walters Bigelow passed away just a few months before Bertha; they were cousins I believe and would stay in touch over the years, and enjoyed talking on the phone and catching up with each other. I am sure they are reunited In heaven, having a lot more to talk about..their lives and families.

Bruce and Pauline,
sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I remember your mom, my Aunt Bertha, very fondly. As a child when we would visit - travelling from Corner Book, your mom always displayed love, and affection, and kindness. And always made us feel welcomed and special.
She made it a point of making cookies called Nanaimo Bars whenever we would visit. And these cookies, I might add, continue to be my favourite. And whenever I have one, or indeed see them, I always think of your mom.
I can remember feeding the chickens with her; turning salt cod on the flakes with her; raking and collecting hay with her; and ... and just spending time with her in the kitchen.
She was a wonderful, kind person, that had a lasting influence on me.
I remember her as always happy; full, just full, of energy, and always on the go. Your mom had the most wonderful and welcoming smile; commonly accompanied by a laugh.
One of life's good souls, who will certainly be missed.

To my cousins Bruce and Pauline and to their families:
Aunt Bertha was a gem, always pleasant even in her latter years. I have lots of great memories, her and uncle John preparing a hockey rink in winter for us to play on and homemade ice cream. Aunt Bertha was a doer even then, nothing she wouldn’t attempt. She was a good neighbour and friend to the family, not only an aunt. She seemed so full of life, and certainly her faith was of the utmost. I will always remember going up to see my grandparents and the care she gave them. Thanks aunt Bertha for being you, and you were very special to me

To the family,
I am very sorry to hear of Bertha's passing. Extending my deepest sympathy to all her family.
I have known Bertha since childhood, having grown up in the same community, and she was a lovely, friendly, pleasant lady. She loved her family dearly and took wonderful care of your grandparents. Your Mom (Grandmother) lived a true Christian life, always showing love and kindness to others. She was well respected by everyone.
Bertha will be fondly remembered for her strong support and Christian work at the Salvation Army, Lower Island Cove. She was so happy to greet me each time I met her there.
May the wonderful memories of your Mom comfort you and the caring, love and support of your families and friends help you journey through the days ahead. Sending much love and blessings to you all.
Rest in peace, Bertha. You are remembered and loved here and the angels are welcoming you in that wonderful place we call Heaven.

Bruce and Wendy, Pauline and Tony we were very sad to hear the news of Mrs. Sparkes passing. We met her when Bruce and I went to work at M. A. Powell in 1978. We had many trips to Lower Island Cove, and visits with the Sparkes family, first in the old house, and later in the new house. She always insisted that we stay for a meal, but if it was on a Sunday, she would have to hurry off after supper to meet her Church responsibilities.
She loved her family and was devoted to them, especially Mr. Sparkes, Bruce, Pauline, and her grandchildren. It was a joy for us to attend Mr. and Mrs. Sparkes twenty fifth anniversary, a surprise party, arranged by Bruce and Pauline.
My lasting memory of Mrs. Sparkes is her sense of humor. She could see something funny in any situation, even in a serious situation. She loved to laugh. She passed that, and many other admirable characteristics to her children.
We send our deepest sympathy to all the Sparkes family.

Bruce, Pauline and family. I find it so hard to believe that Aunt Bertha is no longer with us. I have so many fond memories growing up next door to her. One of my favourite was the lovely suppers she would make which would always include something sweet which I dearly loved. Bruce, she would often get me to play with you even though I was a few years older. I would happily agree not because I wanted to play with you but because I wanted to be invited for supper. Aunt Bertha always had such an abundance of energy. She never walked down through the garden…she always ran and more than likely with no coat on in the middle of winter. She took such good care of our grandparents which I will be forever thankful. She loved you all so much and I know the lovely memories you have of her will help in the difficult days ahead. Rest in peace, Aunt Bertha.

To the family of the Late Bertha Sparkes -
Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Ms. Bertha. I cherish the fond memories of growing up in the Corps and experiencing the true Christian love that she showed so many. Whether it was delivering the War Cry, teaching Sunday School or sharing a word in prayer, Ms. Bertha was a true embodiment of the words found in Ephesians 5:1-2.
As you navigate this difficult time, I know you will take comfort in the knowledge that she is absent from the body and present with her Lord and, has heard her master say, “well done good and faithful servant.”
She has laboured for the Lord and is now Promoted to Glory.
May the Peace of God cover you all. Please be assured of my prayerful support now and in the days to come.
