I remember when:
St John’s days!
I remember when we would all pile into your Volvo and drive around the bay.
The weather was often cold, rainy, or snowy, it didn’t matter.
It was what we did for fun those days.
We would often end up at a beach, or a pub, and after a few drinks, trading silly stories.
we would head back to St. Johns.
I loved your smile, your mischievous grin, and your quiet elf-like presence. It was always fun being with you.!!
1979 Goose Bay Labrador
It was in Labrador that I first met you! You were seated across from me on a single-engine plane flying from Goose Baty to St. Anthony. It was summer 1979.
You talked about your camerawork and your love of photography. I said to you that I hoped we would meet again, not knowing how close we would be in the 80’s and 90’s.
Toronto days
I loved that you would invite me on photograph assignments, as your assistant and sidekick! I watched you plan and execute shooting flowers, garden places, or staged objects, or items for the latest special Interest story.
I was honored when you came to my home to document my wedding ceremony with Jena in 1979. I will cherish that moment forever as you squeezed between the stairs of our small house to capture our wedding ritual.
I remember when you saved me and my bucket of paint from emptying all over the floor of my new apartment. A year earlier(picture) you and Virginia came along with some friends to gather at my place for a Sunday brunch.
There were so many more memories, playing pool, dinners with Diane Marino, and other times too numerous to mention. Our friendship grew from the many times being together over the decades. Spending a lot of time together in friendship!
Thank you, Steve, for being in my life.
Thank you for being You.
I will miss you, Steve.

My sincerest condolences to Steve's family.
A little memory...
"Stevie" as he was known in our neighbourhood and my sister Gail (Babb) Lynch, were good buddies and navigated though lots and lots of new, innocent childhood adventures together....
Steve's mom had left a large pan filled with flour in preparation for making bread in another room of their house as she went about her house work. Steve and Gail decided that it would be fun to get into the pan and cover themselves with four and pretend that they were ghosts!
While he will be missed , he will never be far from our hearts.

In those early years on the 70's, many came to attend university. The Muse and MUN Radio in the TSC was the place to go. We met Steve at the Muse. It was important to keep students up to date with the occupation against union dues in progress. There was lots to report and lots of time to meet others of like mind. Funny enough, when we decided to move on and go to seek fame and fortune elsewhere, those relationships created back in those days still remained. We have been in Ontario since 1972 and still keep in touch with many we met at MUN. Steve you restored your family home in Harbour Grace and we had a chance to visit you and Virginia over the years. You loved NL as much as many of us. It was sad news to hear that his new journey has started. Virginia, we send you our love as you try to deal with his loss. We will all miss Steve.

Hi Grace & Kathy,
Saddened to learn of Steve's passing. Being 10 years older than Steve, and a first cousin, I remember all of the good times my parents, George & Bessie Taylor had with your mother & father, especially after my parents retired in the States and returned to NFLD for a month each year. My dad loved doing small carpentry jobs for your folks and he loved seeing his sister's four kids running around. I have only returned to Harbour Grace/Bristol's Hope 4 times since moving to Boston in 1950. Not getting to know all of my first cousins better has been a disappointment but that is the situation when your parents are part of a large family and members drift far and wide. Please extend my condolences to Virginia. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely and with love. Scott Taylor, Mystic, Connecticut.

We were so sorry to hear about Steve's passing. He was such a kind and gentle man. I always enjoyed chatting with him about film and photography. It was very thoughtful of him to leave the NYtimes kids section in our mailbox! Naveen and Kiran appreciated it. He will be greatly missed on Newmarket Ave. Sending our love to Virgina and all of Steve's family at this difficult time.

John and members of Steve’s family
Many years ago during the 175 th Anniversary Celebration events of St Pauls Church - Steve undertook a pictorial display to highlight the many historical artifacts of the Church. He did this work - which remains today in the Church -with great skill and ability. He was a gifted photographer and an understated personality.
Sincere condolences to those who mourn his passing
Godspeed Steve

I was so saddened to see that Steve had passed and also to learn about Donna. I did not know this. So sorry. It is never easy to lose someone you love. My sincere condolences to you, your families and all of the Payne family.
Steve was so talented and did such magnificent work as a photographer and was well respected by his peers.
I remember fondly the day Steve was born and next day a baby girl was born next door .I really envied you all. We had many good times as children growing up and playing together. So many wonderful memories.
May all of your precious memories (I know you have many ) and the love and support of family and friends help you to soon find peace and comfort. Sometimes a memory will bring a tear but it can also bring a smile to your face. I 'm sure Steve would like that.
I wish I could stop by to see you but right now I have mobility issues. You are in my thoughts and prayers and may God give you the strength to get through the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Betty (Parmiter)

My sincerest condolences to Steve’s family
Steve and I grew up across the street from the arch other, and in primary and elementary school I remember Steve and I
Walking up Martins lane on our way to school. We would throw our recess in a bank of snow, then dive in to find
Them. This of course made us late and full of snow. Our principal Mrs. Alley was none too pleased.
When Steve and his family moved away , I was devastated.... we were real pals.
I am just learning of Steve’s passing, and I feel at a loss to express the many memories I have
God Bless
