Obituary of David Wayne Pearce

“Like an old friend kinder than expected” * David Wayne Pearce passed peacefully away on the morning of July 12th, 2021 in the company of his daughter Rubyanne Whelan and his partner Susan Moores Babb. Wayne and Susan are a testament that it is never too late to fall in love. Leaving to mourn: his daughter Rubyanne Whelan and her mother Anne (Carbonear), his partner Susan Moores Babb (St. John’s) and fellow wordsmith Woodley Whelan (Toronto). Wayne will be missed by the Whelan, Thomey, and Moores families, and his dear neighbours at 804 Veteran’s Rd., Pleasantville, St. John’s. Wayne was predeceased by his father, Chesley of Catalina, his mother, Edwina (Dove) and his brother Lloyd of Harbour Grace, his numerous aunts and uncles, most recently his dear Auntie Fran of Toronto, as well as his beloved dog Ralph, his loyal companion and buddy on the barrens. Wayne’s early childhood was spent in Argentia where his father was postmaster. Fog and the smell of diesel always conjured up memories for him of a very carefree and somewhat solitary childhood. After his father’s death, his mother moved with her two young sons to her hometown of Harbour Grace where Wayne spent his youth and young adulthood. He could often be found on the tennis court with his friend David Andrews. This fuelling a life long friendship and interest in the sport. Wayne was an introvert by nature. Keenly intelligent he saw the world through an empirical lens. Always trusting mathematics, Wayne approached the simplest tasks with precision and attention to detail. He was a healthy skeptic who questioned convention and not surprisingly appreciated satire. Albeit a complicated soul he was deeply sensitive and valued kindness and sincerity. He was fascinated and intrigued by language and nothing pleased him more than a well turned phrase. Possessing a clever wit, he loved a good laugh. While he had not travelled widely, Wayne had an uncanny sense of the world’s geography, which always made him someone you would want on your jeopardy team. Walking gave him great enjoyment and he delighted in nature’s grandeur. The sighting of a northern flicker or the beauty of a magnificent larch tree in spring would make his day. David Wayne Pearce will be laid to rest with his mother and brother in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Harbour Grace, in lieu of visitation and funeral service. “Loss has no end, it binds to our connection” * *Golden Embers by Mandolin Orange ****
