Roy (Or Mr. Rose which I called him - I could never bring myself to call him by his first name) was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and a wonderful father-in-law. I have been going to the Rose's house for the past 18 years since Jeff and I started dating in 1992. I was there for many birthdays, Christmases, anniversaries, etc. When Jeff and I got married in 2000, he hugged me and said "Welcome to the family my darlin'". He was the type of person who always made you feel welcome and a part of the family.
When our daughter Abigail was born in 2005, she became the first granddaughter in the family and I will never forget the Christmas that he sent her a beautiful gold bracelet. He picked it out for her himself. We keep it in a special jewellery box and let her wear it on special occasions. He also did something very special for her that I would like to share.
Abigail has a very special toy that she had since she was a baby. Her name is Miss Bunny. Since it has been loved so much, it is now torn in many places. When we came to Newfoundland to visit in the summer of 2009, of course Miss Bunny had to come along. Abby carries her everywhere she goes. On the day we were leaving to go back to Ottawa, Abigail left her bunny at Nanny and Poppy Rose's house. We had to board the plane without Miss Bunny and Abigail was very upset. When Nanny and Poppy Rose arrived home, they found Miss Bunny. Poppy Rose went straight to the post office and sent Miss Bunny to Ottawa Xpresspost so Abigail wouldn't have to wait too long to see her bunny. When it arrived, Abby was so happy. He put a smile on Abby's face that day. Just today, we walked by the community mailbox on our street and Abigail said "That is the box that bunny came in when Poppy Rose sent her to me". She never forgot about that.
Our son Jack (who is not yet two years old) also got to spend some time with his grandfather. We came to Newfoundland in 2009 when he got christened and again this spring. I have a beautiful picture of Jack with his Poppy Rose and I will be sure to show it to him often as he grows up and tell him what a wonderful man his Poppy Rose was.
Although Abigail, Jack, and I are unable to be with our family in Newfoundland because we are so far away, we are there in our hearts and our thoughts will be with everyone at the Salmon Cove church tomorrow. We will miss him dearly but we have many fond memories to carry with us and we will cherish the time that we spent with him this spring when we came to Newfoundland to visit.

Dear Poppy
We wanted to write a note so that everyone could see that being a poppy was something that you were meant to be. From the days when we were born to our visits at the hospital you always made us feel like we were the bestest boys in the whole wide world Even though mommy says sometimes we are not). We had a lot of sleepovers, BB Q's and many trips to Salmon Cove Sands but our most favorite thing to do was to be hugged by you. Hide and go seek was a favourite game we liked to play and you always joined in the fun, no matter how easy it was to find us. Christmas, birthdays and every other special holiday were so much fun, but they were extra special because you were there. When you got sick, it made us sad but that didn't stop us from loving you with all that we had. A look, or a smile was all that it took to let you know that we loved you and always would. When mommy and daddy told us that you were an angel, it was hard to understand. But we're trying not to be sad Poppy because you are now holding God's hand. We just want to tell you, that you will be missed forever, but don't forget to kiss our cheeks when we are fast asleep.
We Love You and Miss you Poppy
Love
Mackenzie and Noah Rose

We are so deeply sorry for the passing of Roy. My husband TJay worked with Roy in Alberta, and often told me little stories about him. I often called him Ron because my memory for names is not the greatest and TJay would talk of Don and Roy, which I remembered as "Don and Ron". I didn't know Roy personally but TJay spoke of him often. You and your family are in our prayers. Tjay and Wanda

I remember when I was about 7 or 8 years old , I would go to Wareham's snack bar with a quarter that my Nan would give me to buy a drink and bag of chips , but then I would want to play the pinball machine , then I would get some money from Uncle Roy , then when that was gone I had to go home .. Couldn't wait for him to come from work , to get some money and play the game again.....I will miss you forever..

Roy and I worked together in St John's before he was married. We were firstcousins and Roy boarded with my mother. Every Friday morning Roy would being his suitcase to work as be was going around the bay to see louise on the taxi. His fellow workers referred to Fridays as "Bay Day" and the day to play jokes and Roy. Hiding his suitcase and sometimes telling him to look out the window where he would see one of the warehouse men marching up Ropewalk Lane with Roy's suitcase in hand. Sometimes they would nail one of hios overshoes to the floor. All Roy would say is " come on now boys". Roy was well liked and will be dearly missed
