The following is an excerpt of what was read at the funeral home on Friday evening.... Gerald was a brother, a brother-in-law, a neighbour, an uncle, and a friend to many. He was a fixture in a community where the Kyle, the plane, and the Stanley Cup loom large. Many of us could share stories about him... Growing up in Gerald's backyard there was never a dull moment. And as we look back at his life today, he taught us many lessons. 1. Go after what you want but be happy with what you have. 2. Be independent but be grateful for the kindness that others show you. 3. Don't sweat the small stuff. 4. Recycle (and use a bicycle when you can!) 5. Coexist with animals. 6. Don't be afraid to argue your point. 7. Never give up hope - play the lottery once in a while! 8. Be kind to your family and your friends. 9. Sing while you work. 10. Question everything...and go to church. 11. Finally, and most important of all, Be yourself. Gerald, you will never be forgotten.

Tribute to a Special Uncle Carefree…yet a very caring soul Always questioning….but often had his own answers Funny and Unique…and he always had a way of laughing his cares away Great Storyteller…but he always made the time to listen Always busy doing something… but he was never too busy to make time for others Enjoyed the simple things in life…his treasures were his family, friends and few possessions Always had a smile…he had such a positive outlook on life Loved the outdoors…going in the woods or working on his cars was his pride and joy Outgoing…he was a friend to all Always full of surprises…we really didn’t know what he was going to say or do next! For those of us who took the time to really know Gerald, we realize what a great void is left in our lives right now. However, if we look at the positive, like Gerald always did, we are indeed grateful for many things. He didn’t have to battle a lengthy illness. We got to spend many wonderful years with Gerald. We also have so many special memories that will live on in our hearts. I am sure right now Gerald is telling many wonderful stories in heaven, and looking down and smiling upon us all… Rest in Peace Uncle Gerald XOXO…

I was sorry to hear of Gerald`s passing . I have read the wonderful note sent by his nephew Danny --there is little I could add to the tribute he has sent in Gerald`s memory . Gerald was a kind - gentle and out going person .He was a hard worker and made many friends on his earthly journey . We will miss him and we will not soon forget him .As Danny said `` simple is often best `` and many of us overlook the simplicity of life . We should strive for such a life for ourselves and in that process remember our friend Gerald . May he rest in peace.

I am living overseas, and was completely shocked and saddened to hear of my Uncle Gerald's passing. I have a lot to say, but I don't know what to say. Hard to do justice to someone who was nothing except kind to me every time he saw me, for more than 30 years. Gerald had a genuine soul. People say that he had a big smile and kind word for everyone. The incredibe thing was that he ALWAYS had that same big smile, and same kind words, for everyone.Always. Surely he must have had a bad day, or even a bad MOOD, at some point-but I just never saw it. Living next door, he would come visit nearly every day when I was growing up. He was so gregarious and fun-loving that he would always have you laughing. If you were feeling down he cheered you up. If you were in a good mood, he put you in a better mood. How many times, over the years, did I see him come in and lift people's spirits. Then, just as suddenly, as if his work was done, he would be gone, back home. When I would come home from Korea, it was always great to see him and talk with him. You never knew what the topic would be, and you never knew what he might say. He could talk about anything and everything, and he was always entertaining. I'm going to really miss those conversations. Gerald lived a simple life. People forget that the simple things in life are the most important. Gerald never forgot it. In honoring him, we should strive to be more like him,in that we never forget either. Thank you, Gerald, for being one of a kind. Danny

I was so saddened to hear of Gerald's death. I operate the Ultramar Gas Bar in Carbonear. Gerald came to visit me on a regular basis to buy gas and a few tickets. I grew up knowing Gerald all my life and when he came to my store he would let everybody know who I was and how he watched me grow up. I am going to miss his visits and the stories he always carried with him.Precious memories. May He Rest In Peace. Donna

It was so sad to hear of Uncle Gerald's death. It was quite a shock for our family, especially just after losing our Dad (Jerry Collins) just recently. He showed up to the funeral mass for Dad (he actually found his way to the church!, he wasn't sure if he would) My mom Theresa, thought the world of him, and my Dad's last wishes were not to forget him . Uncle Gerald, you are in a better place now, with all of your family in heaven, and are now Safe in the arms of God!! You will not be forgotten. Love, Debbie Abbott- (Collins and family)

I knew Gerald while I was growing up in Riverhead. I became reacquainted with him in recent years when I stopped to speak with him during the course of my morning bike ride. I felt a sense of loss this morning as I passed by his empty house, knowing that the joy these little talks gave me are lost forever. Rest in peace, Gerald. Dennis Galway

Gerald was our next door neighbour growing up, someone who left a pleasant mark on my childhood and this continued throughout the years. I remember getting rides to play hockey on the bog in Riverhead in his old truck and arranging for him to pick me up later in the day when he was finished cutting wood in his grove up on the Hard Path. A kind and jovial soul, Gerald loved a good laugh and this is how I will remember him. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
