Mrs. Layden, Anthony, Albert, Ira & Melissa: I have so many fond memories of Mr. Layden and was quite saddened to hear of his passing. Like so many other kids from Hr. Grace, much of our development not only as hockey players but more importantly as young men took place at the rink. Whether it was his role as a coach or simply as a teammate's dad, his presence had a positive impact on so many of us. My thoughts are with you all at this very difficult time. Jason Sinyard

Dear Jeanette & Family, We were very sorry to hear of Albert's passing, it struck us with a deep sense of sadness. Albert's generosity and commitment to the greater community will be dearly missed. I remember him coaching us in minor hockey, and his intellect and hard working approach helped all of us to become better people. Albert also helped guide my career as an engineer, and for that I too am thankful. His memory will live on and guide many of us to better lives in our communities. A worthy legacy indeed. Yea, though I walk throught the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear not evil: for thou are with me: thy rod and staff they comfort me. Family and friends; Over the years I have spent a lot of time with Uncle Col (Albert) and Aunt Jeanette. This week I have been flooded with thoughts of them and my thoughts are complete with fun and laughter. One special memory is of the year that I told my uncle that the men in our extended family were unfair in leaving us (the girls) out of their annual may 24th fishing trip! It was, after all, for the fathers and sons. We were for weeks discussing the trip with the conclusion that I could go, but I had to follow the rules. My pack was to contain enough grub for two boil ups and enough to share. I would need: potatoes, a can of beans, a can opener to get at the beans, bologna, bread, tea and an apple juice can to boil it in, sugar and milk, sweets of course- to share, a plate, a fork and knife, and of course a cast iron frying pan to cook over the open fire. I had to carry it all myself without complaint. When fishing I was to put the worm on the hook myself. It was the rule. At the first boil up when the fire was going and I pulled out my stuff my Uncle Col (Albert) spent twenty minutes laughing- a hearty Uncle Col laugh. I will remember his laughter through the tears. I miss you and I love you but I will keep the faith so I will see you again. Aunt Jeanette, Anthony, Albert, Ira, Melissa, and families; you are close at heart with love and prayers. Lynn

We were so saddened to read of Albert's passing today. Although we haven't seen each other for a long long time, I have so many pleasant memories of our working years together, those were the best days for sure. I had no idea Albert was a United Church Minister, how wonderful. As we are both in our 70's now, we haven't been doing much out of town travelling for quite some time, so we would have no way of knowing. Jeanette, Marguerite & I send our sincere condolences to you and your family. God Bless you all. Wally & Marguerite Earles St. John's

Dear Jeannette: Ettie emailed last night with the sad news of Albert's passing. I can only imagine what he (and you by his side) have gone through in the past year since I have seen you! I had such a shock when I saw you then at convocation! I knew he had had cancer but had not heard that he was battling it again! Albert fought this battle long and hard--I'm sure put everything into it--in the same way that he approached his studies! I liked Albert and respected him for his hard work and his dedication to the church and his family--even though I loved to tease him about his 'noni' juice and various other things--and he did his share of teasing too! I considered him a friend! My thoughts and prayers are with you Jeannette--although I know that you realize that he died having done so much good for others --you have a huge loss. Take care of yourself! Ettie said some of the AST gang are going to the attend the funeral! I wish I were on the NF side of the Gulf as I would like to be there too! I will be thinking of you. May God give you strength and peace as you face the difficult days ahead. With my prayers and sympathy, Lana

Jeanette, Melissa and Family. Sorry to hear about Albert's passing, but we can all rest assure that he is rejoicing with the angels in heaven as we mourn him here on earth. I have fond memories of Albert from back when I sang at many Gospel Sings down at the United Church in Victoria. His kind words and encouragement went a long way, and made me feel comfortable when I felt out of place because I was much younger then everyone else. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through this time of trouble. I would also like to send my condolences on behalf of my parents, Pastor Wallace and Judy White, and the congregation of The Family Worship Centre, Hr Grace, NL.

Melissa, I am so sorry to hear about your dad, I only found out earlier tonight and I remebered all the times we sang in church choirs your mom and dad were always there to watch our performances. I know how close you were to him and Im sure you are going to miss him- but thats when you need to start remembering the good times. He was a great man, and to go into ministry was definately his calling, it suited him. I hope in time you will be able to heal. If there is anything I can do please let me know.

Jeannette: Sheila and I were so sorry to hear about Albert this morning. Our hearts broke for you. We know he suffered physically these past few months, but the last time I spoke with him he was his usual cheerful, optimistic, and spiritual self. Our memories of him will always be positive, happy ones. Sheila especially remembers that summer in Halifax when she really got to know him as he enjoyed her meals and her singing while he was trying to study in the room over our apartment. Our prayers are with you and your family now. May the God who has carried you through so much in the past continue to bless and strengthen you in and with His grace and comforting presence now. Dear Aunt Jeanette and Family; You will never know what having Uncle Col in our lives has meant to us; not only as an Uncle but a friend, we had the honor of having him officiate our marriage ceremony and it is something that we cherish greatly; (Billy always said he wanted to go around the Bay to see Uncle Col preach, never knowing that the first time would be for his own wedding).. Uncle Col not only offered us spiritual guidance, but he helped us to see what was truly important, our faith in God and our love for one another.. our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time..we love you always..
