Obituary of Emily Jane O'Grady
Please share a memory of Emily Jane to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Passed peacefully away at home on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, Emily Jane O’Grady of Carbonear, age 92 years.
Predeceased by husband: Joseph; parents: Herbert and Margaret Noel; brothers: Hubert (Marion), Albert (Mary), and Selby (Hope); sisters: Allison (Donald) Pottle and Mildred (Clayton) Peach; grandsons: Wayne Jr and Justin; granddaughter: Tawni.
Leaving to mourn, six sons: Wayne (Temwani), Edmonton, AB, Paul (Donna), Calmar, AB, Larry (Margie), Brian (Nina), Chris (Lynda), and Neil, all of Carbonear; twelve grandchildren: Sean (Laura), Danielle (Justin George), Denise, Erin, Timothy, Matthew, Michael (Lindsay), Jason (Emily), Kyle (Susanna), Jessica (Jonathan Hearn), Brandon, and Thandi; nine great-grandchildren: Vaughn, Seger, Jesse, Grady, Ayla, Isaac, Jack, Verity, and Lilli; special homecare workers: Kelly Vaters and Lori Griffin; plus a large number of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
Emily was born in Freshwater, Carbonear in 1930. After finishing school, she attended Memorial University College in St. John’s in the teacher training program. In 1948, at the age of 17 she traveled to Petites on the south coast to teach in a one room schoolhouse. In 1949, she moved to Gander for work where she met the love of her life, Joseph O’Grady. They married soon after and had six sons. In 1965, Joseph was tragically killed in a work-related accident. The family returned to Carbonear and Emily dedicated the rest of her life to raising her family; her undeniable strength and bravery continued with her throughout her days.
She had limited income but her children never felt in need. Thanks to her guidance, her boys all went on to have great careers and families of their own. They travelled far and wide but always returned home to Mom for family gatherings at the big house on Musgrave Street! She had a large circle of friends and enjoyed baking, playing bingo, and travelling with her seniors’ groups.
Her intelligence, dry wit, and sound advice will be deeply missed by all. We love you Mom, Nan, and Great-Nan.
