Obituary of Raymond Jacobs

Ray Jacobs, 87 years old of Ochre Pit Cove, Conception Bay, passed peacefully away on August 14th, 2022. His parents were Everett and Maude Jacobs. Ray spent his early adult life in Ochre Pit Cove where he helped his family raising cattle, sheep and pigs and working in Jacobs’ Meatshop. He was popular along the shore; loved a party and a drink and frequently displayed his ‘dancing on a dinner plate’. In 1954 he married Melvina Noftle of Mulleys Cove and had five children. During this marriage he was well known up and down the shore as the ‘TV Repairman’ and had actually built a tv from scratch; he worked as a truck driver in Churchill Falls, held a fisherman’s license, experienced the seal hunt and was an exceptional carpenter, mechanic and steel rigger; he truly was a ‘jack of all trades’. He moved to Toronto and worked with Rogers TV and was given special recognition for completing the steel tower on the CN Tower. He moved on with his brother, Frank, to the United States and spent many years steel rigging together in New York, Boston, Florida, and Washington. In 1990 he married Olga Priddle of Bell Island and resided in St. John’s where he worked for the Department of Public Works until his retirement in 1997. Olga brought two children from a previous marriage into the family. Ray loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren very much. He reminded them often that a hard day’s work is nothing to be afraid of, and his value of a good education was second to none. He enjoyed the gifts that life gave him, and encouraged his family to do the same. Ray is predeceased by his son, Carl; parents: Everett and Maude; brothers: Reg, Jack, Grayson, Frank, and Fred; his sister, Audrey, and his grandson, Brad Hayden. Leaving to mourn, his wife, Olga; his four children: Yvonne (Michael), Cheryl (Vince), Brad (Denise), and Shawn (Jackie); mother of his children: Melvina, and brother, Jim (Violet); step-children: Brenda (Matt) and Bryan (Susan); grandchildren: Lloyd (Katie), Mark (Chantelle), Everett (Kim), Jill (Tobias), Ben (Allie), Allison, Carlie, and Neal; step- grandchildren: Robyn, Nicholas, Danielle, Liam, and Camille; great-grandchildren: Landon (USA), Kendra, Landen (Alberta), Hayden, Lexie, Mai, Belle, Sophia, Alba, and Ellis; as well as a number of nephews and nieces. Ray’s last comments were that he lived life to the fullest, felt loved, and was proud of the accomplishments of his family. He didn’t want anyone to feel sad and truly believed that we would all meet again. Until then, he will be watching over them as a shining star.
