Passed peacefully away in the presence of loving family at Pte. Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion, Carbonear on Friday, June 4, 2021, Eva Lillian King of Blackhead, age 102 years.
Predeceased by husband: Ralph; son: Leonard; great-granddaughter: Jennifer; parents: Leonard and Elizabeth Moores; brothers: Stanley, William, and Eric; sister: Sadie.
Leaving to mourn, one daughter: Judy (Terry) Oliver, Blackhead; four sons: Harvey (Elvia), Perry’s Cove, Stanley (Wendy), Bay Roberts, Reginald (Hilda), Blackhead, and Wesley (Robena), Adam’s Cove; daughter-in-law: Edna, Victoria; seventeen grandchildren: Lillian, Leonard, Paulette, Wayne, Jackie, Keith, Debbie, Tammy, Cynthia, Juanita, Glen, Valetta, Jimmy, Sarah, Heather, Neil, and Adam; twenty great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; brother: George 'Junior' Moores, CBS; sisters-in-law: Margaret Moores and Dianne Moores, both of Ontario; also a large number of other relatives and friends.
Three things defined Eva's life - family, hard work and faith. She loved her family and Sunday visits from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlight of her week. Even in her last few years, when she was in long term care, she looked forward to visits from her family almost daily.
Like many women of her generation her life was one of hard work. She left school in Grade 4 to help her blind, widowed mother care for the home and younger siblings. Her garden in Bradley's Cove flourished because of her devoted care; getting her sons to help haul offal to fertilize it. One summer, of many she spent on the Labrador, she was cook for a crew of men. She would bake bread twice a day along with the other countless chores required to keep the home running. All without the luxury of running water or electricity.
But it was her faith that was her rock. She was always humming hymns and her hymnbook was one of her most prized possessions, its pages dog eared from years of use. It seems she had a hymn for any occasion.
