To the Family of Ed Whalen:
We are very sad to hear of Ed’s death. He was a good friend whose kindness shone through his actions.
For years our bus, North Shore Bus Lines, stopped at Ruby’s Drive-In and Mary Brown’s en route to and from St. John’s and Old Perlican.
Ed was very kind and hospitable to us all: passengers, drivers, and our family. The staff knew our schedule well and was always there to promptly serve with a smile. The Raiders Hockey Team and spectators would also stop there after their late hockey games at the S. W. Moores Stadium. Although late, they were treated kindly with excellent service, yes, even table service. If there was a player who scored a hat trick, Ed treated him to a free snack pack. It was all part of the fun and enjoyment.
Ed’s friendship continued long after the bus days. Whenever we met, there was always good conversation and often a meal. He was interested in how we were all doing.
Ed was always there with encouragement particularly for Elsie in her journey of ministry. Our children are now grown and they still speak of Ed’s kindness when they were students.
Ed will be sadly missed but he lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. We extend sympathy to Ruby and family. May you all be comforted by the love that surrounds you and the caring thoughts and prayers that are with you.
Max and Elsie Squires

So sad to hear that our dear old friend has passed away. Our connection and friendship with Ed goes back a very long time. It all began at Ruby’s Drive In and restaurant. In the late 60’s and early 70’s during our band days, our last stop before going home in the late hours of the morning was at Ruby’s Drive In and restaurant for a feed of half chicken, fries and gravy. There were times Ed would inquire, “where are the boys playing at tonight”. If it was Colliers on a Saturday night he knew we would be late. He at times would have the restaurant closed because of the late hour, but keep a fryer on and keep a waitress back and wait for us to arrive. We felt so privileged. This happened on many occasions. As the years rolled on and we went on with our lives Ed would occasionally run into our father at the mall in Carbonear. First comment to dad was, “how are the boys doing”. We had the opportunity to talk to Ed in recent years and what we found amazing was his memory for detail back in the day. Thanks Ed and Rest In Peace. Forever in our memories and our hearts!
Our condolences to you Ruby and your family.

Mrs. Whelan, Anne and family,
I was so honored to have known Mr. Whelan all of my life. We would always chat when we would see one another and he would remind me that I am a good friend of Annes. He created employment in an area that is often suppressed with the ability to offer employment to its residents. Mr. Whalen created good working jobs and as I was told by many he was a kind and good employer and friend. I will miss him at St. Paul's when I think he attended as many funerals as I did. He continued to be a presence at many funerals giving support well into his eighties. He would always end our chats with "Pray for me ". My last prayer friend will be, Be at rest and at peace, well done good and faithful servent.

He had great knowledge and was eager to share his knowledge with others
More than that- Ed was a friend and confidant to many - never to busy to have a talk.
Ruby’s drive in was part of all of us who grew up in Hr Grace - many great memories of all that
Ed made contributions on several levels to his Town and Province.
In his day and generation he made a difference to many.

My Deepest condolences to all the Family. I work at Walmart and enjoyed when Ed would come in and ask me to help him shop we would torment each other over the prices. He will be greatly missed. RIP Mr Whelan.

Ruby & family,
I want to apologize for my tardiness in expressing my condolences. Ed will certainly be missed ( that is an understatement). Ed was an individual who oozed both passion & pride for his community & Immaculate Conception Parish. I know how hurt & disappointed he was when the decision to close the church was made. He made great contributions to his church & community. RIP Ed.
