Roy and I, cousins, were born in the same year in Carbonear. Uncle Harry and Aunt Beattie apart from being cousins, were great friends of my parents, Alma and Mark Badcock .. my condolences for your loss. I always loved talking to Roy. He had a great sense of humour. .. a queer hand... and a good outlook on life. I have sent a donation to the Shriners in his memory.

Sending sympathies and condolences on the passing of Mr. Saunders. Growing up on LeMarchant St. with all the neighborhood kids including Barb and Craig made for random interactions with him. He had a grand humour and made us gitty with glee and always told silly jokes. His laughter rumbled down the street. A giant of a character in my childhood memories. I can hear his voice in my head now.

Bill; please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your grandfather.
Another leaf has fallen, another soul has gone. But still we have God's promises, in every robin's song. For he is in His heaven, and though He takes away, he always' leaves to mortals, the bright sun's kindly ray. He leaves the fragrant blossoms, and lovely forest, green. And gives us new found comfort, when we on Him will lean.

Sorry to hear about Mr. Saunders passing. I remember as a young Telegram newspaper carrier doing "the rounds" on Rusted Place and of the 40 houses I visited each day the Saunders household was the "liveliest." The Saunders house wasn't your typical drop-the-paper-the-door kinda customer. Pretty much everyday Mr. Saunders would meet me at the door and always had large smile and laughed so hard I'm sure Freshwater heard him. We would have our little chats in the porch that always began with "Where's little Duane?" in a high pitched voice that could be the start of a children's TV show on CBC. Duane is my older brother who handed down the paper route to myself so I can only imagine the chats they had too. All through my childhood and into teenage years as we played street hockey Lemarchant Street, every time Mr. Saunders drove by he would always slow down, roll down the window and scream his trademark call. He definitely enjoyed life and always made you laugh and feel good.He made the world a better place, he will be missed.

Frances Gary Paul Barb and all the family my sincere sympathies on the passing of Roy. I don’t know of anyone so colourful as Roy. I can’t help but smile as I remember him and the many stories he told me over time. He had a heart of gold and an amazing talent for figures. A walking calculator. I so hope that his first moments on the “other side” were spent reuniting with his beloved Craig. My few trips to the capelin trap in Bristol’s Hope in the 80’s are some of my favourite memories. He was one of a kind for sure. Never a dull moment. So sad to see him go but so glad to have known him. Rest In Peace.

We're really thinking of Frances and all the family down here at the memory of one of Carbonear's living legends and one of the last links with the old Earle Freighting Service he and my father loved so well. What times they had! Roy's illness these past years was a loss to many shut-ins and afflicted whom he would visit and cheer up with his boisterous intelligent personality. We would call each other every 2-3 months and tears would fill my eyes from laughing. He visited my father only a minute after he died and wanted to sit with the family during both mom and dad's funeral. Friends are for life down there in NL and Roy's friendship was always highly prized by me since I was a 12 year old. I'm sure heaven got a lot louder in the last 24 hours! Blessings to all who read this--NE

Growing up just down the street, Mr. Saunders was a big figure in my childhood (literally and figuratively), especially as they had a store behind their house and right next door to one my best friends growing up. I remember going there often, perhaps even before I entered Grade 1, with money that the older kids from the school next to our house (St. James) would give me to by snacks and bring back to them whilst they were in class. Even as I write this I have a memory having money tucked into a pair of sneakers that had pockets in the tongue (Roo's). I'd always be trying to scrounge up enough change to buy some 1-cent candy with Jason Foote. Later when I had a paper route the Saunders' house was always one of the houses I looked forward to delivering to (and collecting my tip!). Mr. Saunders, every time he saw me and even as an adult, would greet me in a high-pitched voice with something that sounded like "Wee little dee-wayne!" (Wee little Duane perhaps?). Always made me laugh. Rest well.

Mrs. Saunders and Family ,
Where to begin.Roy Saunders was one of the key players in his knowledge of just about any fishery taking place here on the island and in Labrador.. A middleman man between the fishermen , the company he though so much of and agencies like the Canadian Saltfish Corporation. He could supply volumes of sound , proven and useful information that guided those involved at that time.
His stories at times could be so funny bringing so many smiles over the years. Roy thought highly of his friends along the Labrador coast and they with him .
We will be thinking of you all in the days ahead.
